Description of the concert

“My ‘The Queen of Spades’ is in great fashion. Card players punt on the three, the seven and the ace”
(A. S. Pushkin)

“The Queen of Spades was written with particular love. My God how tearful I was yesterday when my poor Herman was given the last rites”
(P. I. Tchaikovsky)

Yuri Bashmet and Pavel Safonov, a young actor and dramatic theatre director, the star of the Vakhtangov Theatre, who has been collaborating with the maestro for several years at festivals, will offer the public a new, own version of the Pushkin-Tchaikovsky masterpiece.
The authors of the new version have decided to revive the background to the story — the protagonists of the play will be… Count of St. Germain and the young Countess Anna! Once upon a time in Versailles, this mysterious and unravelled man won the love of the Russian beauty — the “Muskovite Venus”, revealing to her the secret of the card game. However, does the Countess know the terrible condition of the secret? What kind of reckoning awaits her in the future? Sixty-nine years later, fate appointed a new meeting
for the lovers – even if they would already become ghosts. Did their feelings for each other survive? What blow does the Countess expect from the ardent young man in love? Which passion will eventually win — passion, revenge or love?
Answers to these questions will be provided by the new play, featuring Russia’s leading opera and dramatic artists. Nadezhda Mikhalkova will perform the role of the young Countess, while that of the Count of Saint-Germain will be delivered by Sergey Epishev of the Vakhtangov Theatre. The voice parts will be performed by soloists of the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia Maria Lobanova (Liza), Sergey Radchenko (Herman), artist of the Youth Opera Program of the Bolshoi Theatre Andrei Kimach (Yeletsky) and the artist of the Stanislavski and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre Anton Zaraev (Tomsky).
The Countess’s part will be performed by Irina Bogacheva, an outstanding singer, a People’s Artist of the USSR, and long-standing soloist.
The Novaya Rossiya State Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by maestro Yuri Bashmet.
