Description of the concert

The activities of the Instrumental Department have traditionally been known for the large scope and intensity compared to other areas of the International Music Academy under the Sochi festival. The name of the maestro Yuri Bashmet attracts the greatest contemporary musicians to Sochi — virtuoso performers, soloists, teachers, professors from prestigious educational institutions in Europe, Asia and America, who are ready to share their experience and mastery lessons with young musicians.

This time around, the Instrumental Department has been expanded to eleven specialties, covering almost the entire range of the contemporary symphony orchestra.

For the first time in Sochi, there will be lessons by Dmitry Bashkirov, a world-famous pianist and educator, a People’s Artist of the RSFSR, a professor at the Moscow Conservatory, a professor at the International Piano Academy Lake Como (Italy) and one of the founders of Queen Sofia College of Music in Madrid.

The following personalities will hold string instrument classes:

Yuri Bashmet (a People’s Artist of the USSR, head of the Viola Department of the Moscow Conservatory),

Jens Peter Maintz (Professor of cello at Berlin University of the Arts),

Nam Yun Kim (Professor of violin at Korea National University of Arts),

Violinist Tatiana Samouil (Professor at Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel and the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp, Belgium);

Violinist Roman Balashov (Associate Professor at the Moscow State Conservatory, Honored Artist of Russia).

Classes on wind instruments will be held by the following:

Flutist Emily Beynon (a teacher at the Royal Academy of Music in London, soloist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra),

Oboist Professor Christian Schmitt of the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart,

Clarinetist Harri Maki (Professor at Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, soloist of the Tapiola Sinfonietta orchestra),

Bassoonist Carlo Colombo (Professor at the National Conservatory of Music and Dance in Lyon and at Lausanne Conservatory),

French horn player Radovan Vlatkovic (soloist of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Professor at Mozarteum University Salzburg and Queen Sofia College of Music in Madrid),

Frank Gabriel Campos (jazz and classical trumpet virtuoso performer, Professor at Ithaca College’s Whalen Center for Music, New York).

For the first time under the Instrumental Department, Nebojsa Zivkovic (Serbian composer, virtuoso performer and percussion artist, professor at the

Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna) will be conducting lessons on percussion instruments.

On February 25th, the Hall of Organ and Chamber Music will host a big gala concert to mark the end of the activities of the Instrumental Department of the International Music Academy. The audience will be treated to a rich and diverse program, as well as solo and ensemble performances by young instrumentalists on the same stage with their teachers.
